My Words
The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails
fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. (Ecc
12:11)
Noah Webster says that a goad is: "A pointed instrument used to stimulate a
beast to move faster." As Christians, our words not only should be wise but
should stimulate other Christians to grow AND stimulate unbelievers to search
for Christ.
I also noticed the reference about nails which were fastened by "masters of
assemblies" - these masters were known to be teachers, possibly preachers. I
believe the nails were fastened/held strong in the Word and the doctrine
preached and taught.
Our words should be fitly spoken as Prov. 25:11 states.
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in
pictures of silver. We've read this verse over and over and thought it to
be kind words, or words say "at the right" time. However, in light of Ecc.
12:11, don't you think it really applies here as well (Prov. 25:11 I mean)???
What are MY words leading others to believe? What are MY words teaching my
children? What are MY words speaking to my husband? What are MY words saying to
unbelievers around me? What are MY words communicating to sisters in the Lord?
Are MY words fitly spoken? Are MY words goads which stimulate others to
righteousness?
OR
Do MY words spill out without much thought and foresight? Do MY words show just
how weak in the faith I am? Do MY words bring shame to the cause of Christ?
Oh Heavenly Father, I pray that Your Holy Spirit would convict my heart quickly
and totally when it comes to what comes out of my mouth. Help me to be a
blessing not only in deed but more so in word! I ask this in Jesus' Name. Amen.
